On Sunday, Captain Graham and I played our final match of his captaincy against incoming Captain-Elect Andrew Hardman and the Scottish sensation, Liam Waugh. After a blistering start, we found ourselves 4 up after 5 holes, but that quickly evaporated to 1 up at the turn and level after 10. Thankfully, the halfway hut arrived just in time for us to regroup, and the match continued to ebb and flow until my par on 17 put us 1 up. A closing half on 18 secured the win, rounding off what has been a very enjoyable season of Captain/Pro matches.

This match also marked the introduction of play using winter mats. I found that using the astroturf SPURK mat (available at all good Pro Shops) produced a wonderful contact and flight, plenty of spin, and even an eagle on the 5th!

I would like to thank all of our opponents for their companionship and contribution to these matches, which remain one of the bedrocks of club golf tradition.

Over the course of Graham’s year, we were challenged by 22 pairs of club members. Some matches we won, some we lost, and one ended in an honourable draw. Each one provided a fantastic opportunity for the Captain and me to play with members we might not have met before, build relationships, and hear your views.

After this Saturday’s AGM, the Captain/Pro sign-up sheet will be on the board in the Clubhouse. The incoming Captain, Steve Clarke, and I would love to see some new faces take up the challenge.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the AGM as we welcome our incoming Captain, Steve Clarke, and Ladies Captain, Kamla Jassal.
