Tommy Fleetwood claimed his 8th European Tour win over the weekend at the DP World India Championship. Designed by the Gary Player Design studio, the Delhi Golf Club is one of the most prestigious golf courses in India with a waiting list of over 50 years for those seeking membership.
Fleetwood had played with precision all tournament long and headed into the Sunday in second place, two strokes behind Japan’s Keita Nakajima. While the latter player carded a steady 3-under final round, Fleetwood pounced on the opportunity to overtake him and did so with a string of birdies between holes 7 and 10.
Fleetwood would continue to entertain a flawless back 9 that included 3 birdies, helping him finish on 22-under-par for the tournament. Nakajima finished 2 strokes behind him and Shane Lowry came in third on 18-under-par.
With the Englishman having won the Tour Championship in August and the Ryder Cup in September, it was his third win in as many months and he was granted a long-time wish to win with his son Frankie being able to run onto the green to celebrate with him.
“That was all day today what I had in my mind – could I put myself in a position where I could actually make it happen? It’s just one of those little things. It means so much to me and that was really cool…that’s what I wanted to do all day.”
Tommy Fleetwood is undoubtedly one of the most in-form golfers in the world right now. The World No.5 golfer has had a phenomenal season that’s included both claiming his maiden PGA Tour title and helping Team Europe secure the Ryder Cup for a second time.
He’s also had multiple near misses this year having claimed 8 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. “There’s been plenty of times when things haven’t gone my way, but the last two tournaments I have been in contention in I have won, so maybe things are starting to even out a little bit.”
The natural speculation for a golfer achieving such a season-long trajectory is whether Fleetwood will be eyeing up major success come the Spring. He’s come painfully close multiple times before. He came second at both The Open and the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2019 as well as third at the 2024 Masters. Could 2026 be the year Tommy takes a major trophy?
