This week's success story was George Johnson. He booked a custom fitting session for a new driver. George had lost confidence with his driver and developed a destructive slice shot. The main aim of this fitting was to find George a driver that he hit straighter, and if we gained extra distance then that was a bonus.
The first thing I noticed about his TaylorMade driver was that it was over one inch longer than standard. Straight away the longer shaft makes it far more difficult to strike out the centre of the clubface.
Having tried various heads and shafts we found the PING G30 SF driver to perform the best. Originally it was 10 degrees, but we added 0.6 degrees loft which allowed him to launch the ball on a better height.
The SF Tec head is a draw biased head with slightly more weight in the heel of the club. This allows the toe of the club to square up easier at impact resulting in less shots to the right. It certainly does what it says on the tin!!!!
Ball Data Captured on GC2 Lauch Monitor
Ball Speed: Was 122mph, Now 127mph
Launch Angle: Was 13.2 degrees, Now 13.3 degrees
Sidespin: Was 1009 rpm spin to right, Now 26 rpm to right
Total Distance: Was 191 yards, Now 204 yards
By increasing ball speed dramatically and reducing his left to right cut spin we managed to gain 13 yards total distance. This means that George will now be hitting at least one club less into the greens from the middle of the fairway rather than from the right rough.
Another happy customer leaves JS Golf with a custom fitted club. If you slice the ball with your driver like George used to, click here and book a FREE of charge no obligation custom fit session on our GC2 Launch Monitor with one of our PGA qualified staff.
The snow on Saturday didn't stop our Ladies going out to play in the Three Ball Alliance Competition on Saturday, however the snow settled on the greens and the competition had to be abandoned.
Bunker Play demonstrated by my assistant Glen Portelli
I see too many players who ruin their scores based on one or two shots that find the traps around the green. It doesn't have to be that way, a little practice in the bunker while using these tips should help you feel more comfortable and confident over those shots.
1) Put the ball forward in your stance. Think it's far enough forward? Luke Donald says you can't put it forward enough.
2) Hit it hard. Too many players decelerate on the downswing. This will result in inconsistent results. Always make sure you accelerate through the ball to ensure a consistent strike.
3) Position 70% of your weight towards the target… and keep it there through the swing. Too many people try and "lift" the ball out of the bunker and lean backwards through impact. Keep the ball forward and your weight forward to take a consistent amount of sand every time.
Have a great week and hope to see you at Verulam very soon.
Kind Regards,
Joel, Glen and Stephen
