Kellard Trophy Club
Congratulations to our new Men’s Club Champion Harinder Ranshi who won the Kellard Trophy with scores of 76 and 78. Harinder held off a field of 41 of our finest players here at Verulam and put together two solid rounds of golf in extremely testing conditions. |
Our Nett winner on the day was David Hopps, returning a nett 146 for two rounds, including a best of the day nett 70 in the afternoon. The pro team would like to extend a huge congratulations to this year’s winners and a thank you to all that competed. |
Junior Club Championship
Last Thursday saw a number of our junior members battle it out to become the 2018 Junior Club Champion. In hot and humid conditions, it was Louis Glennister that came out on top. Despite a double and triple bogey on the card, Louis shot a gross 82 to beat the rest of the field. We’d like to say a big well done to all that competed this year, collectively achieving an impressive feat with all players shooting under their respective handicaps!

Coaching of a Club Champion
In the build up to Harinder's Club Championship he continued his progress with coach Laurence by working on his shot shaping which he said was key to his victory. In the takeaway we got the feeling of the club working outside the hands, this allows Harinder to control the clubface how he wants through impact as he was struggling with the odd block right and flip left. |
In the downswing Harinder slots the club in a great position with the shaft going through his right forearm to give him all the power he needs. Having awareness of your clubface is of upmost importance because without this you will struggle to control the flight of your golf ball.

GolfSixes comes to Verulam
On Sunday 5th August, Verulam will play host to the Hertfordshire region’s Junior GolfSixes league. The event will see six of our young stars pair up in a Texas Scramble format over 6 holes and compete against several other local clubs that will be joining us on the day. As it stands, our juniors are top of the league table and we’re sure they’ll love the opportunity to perform at their home club!
Our members should note that this event will have implications with regards to the use of the course in the afternoon of Sunday 5th August. As of 3pm, holes 1, 2, 10, 11, 12 and 13 will be in use for between 2 to 3 hours. We ask that members respect this and encourage any of our juniors they may see around the club on the day!

We’ve spoken a bit about the R&A and USGA in the past when it comes to the Rules of Golf, but golf’s governing bodies also set the limits when it comes to the manufacturing of golf equipment. This includes inspecting things like groove volumes of wedges, COR on iron faces and head sizes of drivers, which are limited to 460 cubic centimetres (cc). |
Why are driver heads limited to 460cc? This was set when drivers leapt from 250cc in 1995 (the first mass produced titanium drivers) to 500cc in 2002. Improving R&D confirmed that larger heads have a higher moment of inertia (MOI), which means that they twist less as impact resulting in straighter shots. At this point, golf’s governing bodies stepped in to ensure further technology improvements didn’t diminish the skill level needed to play well off the tee. What are the benefits? Larger headed 460cc drivers, like the Lynx Black Cat, give you the biggest head possible, which means you can miss the middle of the face now and then and still hit a good shot. This is because they have more room for wider or taller faces, plus a forgiving, higher MOI that adds forgiveness. |
