Verulam Men's Scratch Vs Royston GC (Away) - Sunday, 21 May
Verulam men's scratch team visited Royston GC for their first Division 3 match of the season. Conditions were good for the day, sunny and windy, although being exposed in these conditions on a very steep hill side was not ideal, a number of the team soon regretted their lack of sun protection and the Verulam team captain was seen running into the pro-shop for a trolley with a battery, to ensure he had enough stamina for the day.
The course looked hilly and the 500 yard walk from the club to the first tee made a number of the Verulam team suspicious that this was a clever tactic to tire us out before any shots were played, James Surridge and Dave Dobinson were savvy to this and promptly jumped in a car to get to the tee for the first match. James started proceedings with a solid drive up the side of the mountain and the match was off.
After the morning session, the team were 3-1 down, only Simon Wright and Nick Peters managed to do enough to get the team a hard earned point.
After a second 500 yard stint back to the club house for lunch and a drink the team got back to the tee for the singles matches. Dave Dobinson led out the team with James Surridge and Simon Wright in close succession to ensure we had a solid front order. All games were hard fought and special mentions have to go out to debutants Steve Arnold and Steve Craig who stepped up to play for the club on a tough course, they gave strong accounts of themselves but home advantage is what it is for a reason and points were hard to come by. After the singles matches were played, we found ourselves 8-4 down, considering the course and home advantage is a very respectable outcome.
Result: 8-4 loss
Special Mentions
Points: Simon Wright / Nick Peters (foursomes), James Surridge (singles), Simon Wright (singles), Gus Scott-Morris (singles).
Idiot of the day: Mike Aunger for running 200 yards up a sheer face to hit tee shot number 3 when the hole was clearly lost.
Man of the match: Gus Scott-Morris made his scratch team debut playing off an 11 handicap. The boy has some strong shoulders as he carried Aunger through their foursomes match and after telling everyone in the clubhouse how he was going to deliver a point for the skipper, promptly beat his singles opponent (a solid 4 handicapper) 4 and 3 to deliver a point for the team. Respect.
The team that faced Royston: Dave Dobinson, James Surridge, Simon Wright, Nick Peters, Steve Arnold, Steve Craig, Gus Scott-Morris & Mike Aunger.
Thanks to all who gave up their Sunday's to represent the club, a loss but a good loss if there is such a thing.
