Hello golfers,

Welcome to this week's newsletter. It's another jam packed mail, with the fierce England v Scotland derby taking place, a superb father and son performance, all the build up to the winter league and more...

We hope you enjoy the read...

Competition news

On Saturday we held our annual, fiery, England vs Scotland match.

The match was made up of 8 games and was played in a great spirit as always.

This year, the Scottish came out on top and left the English heartbroken.

Well done to the Scottish team.

Goblets Final

As the season comes to a close, we have lots of club knockout finals taking place. This week we had the final of the Herts Goblets with the inform man Andy Martin and his son Stefan, taking on Mark Barnard and Richard Hunt

Despite the early start both pairs came out of the traps quickly and halved the first with nett birdie's with Rich Hunt rolling in a superb 20ft putt.

Barnard and Hunt went one up with excellent wins on 6 & 7 with a birdie and nett birdie respectively.

Martin senior then rolled in from 30ft from the front of the 10th green for a birdie 2 to go 1 up.

The game remained tight through 16 and then with Martin Senior out of the hole they approached the 17th green unsure whether Stefan's ball had made the green.

It turned out to be perfect judgement as the bright yellow ball sat 5ft short of the hole and the Martin's had won an exciting and very sporting final.

Artisans win the Waddell Trophy

A huge congratulation goes to the Verulam Artisans who beat Sandy Lodge in the final of the prestigious Tom Waddell Trophy.

The team were 4-1 up going into the away leg on a tough course at Sandy Lodge. The team held their nerve and came away with the trophy, winning with an overall score of 7-3.

Well done to Mick Russell who came back from being 3 down to win 2 and 1, and well done to the rest of the team.

Coaching news

A lot of you may have noticed that there has been a repetitive name being mentioned recently in the newsletters. This has been due to a recent surge in form for Andy Martin. After winning the Marten Cup recently he also achieved another gold leaf by winning the summer doubles knockout competition.

Is there a secret to Andy's recent form?

He has been working on his swing with Verulam Professional Glen Portelli, and the results have been very encouraging.

Glen's Analysis

As you can see from the pictures of Andy's Swing, He become very tilted and stuck behind the ball. This meant that Andy found it very hard to control his club face through impact. A more efficient hip turn whilst staying more central at impact has made all the difference.

Here's what the man in form had to say…

"On the first lesson Glen could sense how frustrated I had become with my Golf". Andy described his own golf similar to "banging his head against a brick wall each weekend".

"My son Stefan has been coached by Glen for a couple of years and it's a pleasure to see the continual progress and see him swing the club like a 'proper golfer'.

"I decided to also take some lessons with Glen and I think it is fair to say I gave him some problems. Glen very quickly gave me some drills that made sense to me but also didn't make think I was starting from scratch.

"I can't recommend the lessons enough, and it's not often I head into winter with the potential of enjoying some better golf".

If you would like to see how some expert tuition could help your game like Andy, click here to get in touch, or come and have a chat with us in the pro shop.
