iPlay Golf Evening
On Friday we took a group of our members up to the iPlay Golf centre in Milton Keynes. We went to show our members the excellent facilities we will soon have here at Verulam.
The members played a number of holes round the famous Hazeltine National GC, host of this year's Ryder Cup followed by a selection of nearest the pin challenges on well-known par 3's from around the world. We hope the evening was enjoyed by all.

Many of you have been asking when the completion of our studio will be. The structure has now had its roof raised and the electrics have been fitted. It's getting very close now and we are all very excited.
If everything goes to plan the Studio should be open early to mid-March.

Steve Clarke Gains 11 Yards with New Mizuno Irons
Last week Steve arranged a custom fitting session to try the new Mizuno MP25 irons. He understands the importance of choosing the correct head, shaft, shaft length, lie angle and grip. We were equipped with our Foresight GC2 launch monitor and Mizuno DNA fitting cart.
First we discussed what Steve wanted from a new set of irons. Steve mentioned that he wanted a higher ball flight enabling him to control the ball when it hits the green. Distance wasn't a major factor but wouldn't mind some extra yardage. We discussed further and recorded some numbers on the launch monitor with his current Orka irons.
6 Iron Ball Data
Ball Speed - 111 mph
Launch Angle - 13.1 degrees
Spin Rate - 5703 rpm
Carry Distance = 154 yards
Peak Height - 20 yards
Having gone through the DNA process to find the three suitable shafts and then narrowing it down to one shaft we then found the correct shaft length, lie angle and finally grip and grip size.
6 Iron Ball Data v Mizuno MP25
Ball Speed - 111 mph - 117 mph
Launch Angle - 13.1 degrees - 16.1 degrees
Spin Rate - 5703 rpm - 5948 rpm
Carry Distance - 154 yards - 165 yards
Peak Height - 20 yards - 28 yards
To summarise; we increased ball speed, launch and backspin, gained 11 yards carry distance and created 8 yards of higher ball flight.
Steve prefers to see a smaller head with his shorter irons therefore we chose the muscle back Mizuno MP5 in the 8, 9 and PW all of which were matched to the same specifications.
Steve also received a FREE dozen Mizuno Balls worth £39.99 as per the current promotion.
This is what Steve had to say about the fitting:
"There are dozens of different grips, hundreds of shafts and heads, lie angles to think of and thus millions of possibilities so how are you to find the right club? That daunting prospect was what took me to a custom fitting session with Joel in search of a new set of irons.
A set of Mizuno MP25s had looked my way suggestively on a number of occasions, I had returned a few furtive glances and Joel had all the Mizuno fitting set up and technology to bring us together. First up was the Mizuno Swing DNA. A phone size device attached to the shaft that read things like your speed and tempo, and after three swings suggests the three best shafts from over 50 options. All three suited my swing, but there was one I couldn't live with the look of; steel dressed like graphite.
After hitting more balls with the other two, the Project X shaft won out because it gave the higher ball flight I was looking for.
A check for lie (1 degree upright), grip size (1 extra layer of tape) and my choice of the new Golf Pride Z grips and I was all set.
There was no extra cost for shaft or grip choice and Joel beat the price of a well-known internet retailer.
Oh and the MP25, well I had my head turned by a set of leggy MP5s in a short skirt and they were great to hit so I was torn. No problem for Joel. I now have a mixed set of MP5s PW to 8 and MP25s 7 to 4; the best of both worlds. Try picking that off the shelf at American Golf."
